40 seconds of the most glorious reverb you’ve ever heard. The audio here doesn’t quite do it justice but we recorded 4 days here and came up with some great music. We’ll be mixing it soon, so stay tuned for a release…

My friend Jesse Canterbury and I are headed to Port Townsend to do a recording project in the Cistern. Basically a huge water tank, 200 feet in diameter, with a 45 second reverb. Holy shit! Dual bass clarinets will be a great combination for this unique space. I’m excited to hear what types of sounds will come out. Jesse and I have come up with a few pieces composed specifically for this space, and of course we’ll be improvising. We’ll each be doing some solo things too.

The few acoustic instrumental recordings I’ve heard done in the Cistern are really interesting. The sound of the harmonics all from the same instrument bouncing around with each other creates a phenomenal sound. Each instruments unique timbral qualities are magnified in this space.

6 months isn’t really that long to update your website right?

Goat: We’re working on a new record! We’ve been working hard on new music and will be recording this summer. The new record will be available on Seattle’s new record label Table and Chairs in the fall. in the meantime come check us out (and get a glimpse of some of the new music) on May 6 at the IMP fest.

Burn List: A new quartet I’m working with and its really great. Me on tenor, Cuong Vu on trumpet, Aaron Otheim on keyboard and Chris Icasiano playing drums. Its a unique group and we’re doing all original music. Come check out a few gigs on April 22 and April 30. Look to the right for more details.

Uncle Pooch: Pooch just got back from a sucessful South by Southwest appearance and we’ve finished tracking a new record! It sounds friggin great too. Scott Colburn got some really great EWI sounds and I’m really looking forward to hearing the finished record.

Composition: My percussion quintet will be recorded this spring and I’m excited to be co-producing the recording. Check back here for a few sound bites… I’m also working on a new piece for chamber ensemble and hope to have it finished by the fall.

Cistern Project: In September I’ll be doing a dual bass clarinet project in the Fort Warden Cistern with my good friend Jesse Canterbury. The Cistern is one of the most unique acoustic spaces on the planet. We’ve come up with some compositional frameworks that utilize the specific acoustic characteristics of the Cistern and I’m really looking forward to a week underground! I’ll have some sound up here as soon as its available.

Visual Art: I’m still having a ton of fun making a mess in my basement. I’ve moved to more painting but still have a lot of collage going on. I’ll post pictures soon.

Thanks for reading and drop a line if you feel like it.

I’ve been working with the Seattle Percussion Collective and they will be premiering the piece on October 2nd at the Chapel Performance Space at the Good Shepard Center

The piece is scored for piano, vibes, marimba and 2 multi-percussionists (gongs, cymbals, temple blocks and more!). Its in two movements and I’m pretty happy with the results.

I’m excited to hear it and really appreciate the opportunity to write it. Its interesting finishing something like this. I worked countless hours on this and in the end I really don’t have much to show for it. I have a pretty score and parts but its manifestation doesn’t really come till its heard. And even then, its manifest for 10 minutes then gone. An odd thing. Maybe thats why I like improvisation so much. Its in the now and reflects whats happening in the current space.

I bring this up because I’ve been doing a lot of visual art. After hours working on a piece you have something palpable, something made with my hands and something physical to show for it, you can touch it, even take it with you somewhere. Theres something very satisfying about it. So much so I’ve been spending more time doing that than music. It somehow fills a void that music can’t, at least not right now…

Come to the concert!
